Hello Everyone,

My name is Xero. I am 27 years old and soon to be graduating from a civil engineering technologist program. I am also a former paramedic. Not that any of this matters, just figured I'd give some background information on myself.

I enjoy intelligent discussion and have recently left another forum of which I was a part of since '03. Basically I got sick and tired of the tired old "atheist clique" that infected that forum. It's fine to question religious and other precarious beliefs, however it is entirely another thing to gang up on someone and basically use "you are stupid" as evidence that "religion is wrong".

After calling the forum founder out on the utter corruption and hypocrisy that was pervading site (there was a thread he had started asking specifically about this, it wasn't unsolicited or an attack) he deleted my post and had me moderated.

At that point I realized it was utterly hopeless to think that these people would ever grow up, so I left. I wasn't going to stay somewhere, where relevant, factual, and fair posts are deleted simply because the merits of that post conflict with the "popular vote".

I have spent some time reading over the current threads, although I will probably hold off from posting for a while, until I get a feel for this place. From the way it looks, even when people have conflicting opinions and are flat out calling each other wrong, that it isn't malicious or juvenile. I believe this to be essential for individual and communal intellectual growth, in an online forum.

Once again, none of this is really relevant. Perhaps I like hearing myself talk. Or write. Type, I suppose. Either way, I look forward to getting to know you all.

Cheers

Welcome, Xero. :)

This board has a lot of members who have been regulars at lots of previous forums, and some who've never posted anywhere else. We admins are alumni of the old Internet Infidels. We require mostly civil exchange, but allow a considerable degree of flames and incivility in our Smoking Section forum; and you can put that whole forum on Ignore, if you want. (It's also our place for NSFW stuff, so if you post from a work computer you probably should do that.)

We're still a fairly young board- in fact yesterday was the second anniversary of our going public. But the people here are mostly old internet hands.

Hope you enjoy our Cafe!

Welcome to the Cafe, Xero! (Damn, it's hard to type over a hot bowl of oatmeal!)

Like Jobar says, many of us, and all the admins, are veterans of many boards of all kinds, and have seen the worst and the best. I think we do a damn good job of fostering civil discussions of our disagreements, discouraging content-free flames while providing a place for the occasionally-needed outlet. From the sounds of your story, I think you'll like it here.

Dive in and enjoy yourself!

Hi Xero,

Welcome, from someone who had never posted anywhere before joining the Cafe. I joined and intended just to read a bit and lurk around, and I've been here ever since. Its a nice mix of folk here, I hope you enjoy it :)

Hello Xero! Welcome to the forum, and I think you will find it an improvement on wherever you came from. I've seldom visited a secular forum where such civil conduct dominated.

Up yer bum!Except for that fellow, apparently.

Unless that was a remarkably unsubtle pick-up line?

No not at all, actually it was a desperate attempt to balance out the yin and yang. I haven't fully worked out all the details, but if the excessive civility in this thread isn't counterbalanced somehow, well, the results could be catastrophic
