Wolves & coyotes interbreed but...
Most of the hybrids live eastern Canada.
Normally, wolves chase coyotes away from their territory or attack and kill them.
The number of wolves, however, has dwindled since settlers started moving west in the 1700s. When the picking's poor, a male wolf will mate with a female coyote. Their offspring live and reproduce.
Apparently, male coyotes don't mate with female wolves. At least, their offspring don't survive.
"This may indicate that the smaller male coyotes cannot inspire the larger female gray wolves to mate with them," speculates Robert K. Wayne, biology professor, University of California at Los Angeles.

Sounds like a bit of a contradiction.
Perhaps female wolves are more choosy than males. After all, dogs are descended from wolves and we all know male dogs who will happily mate with human legs.

But what is really scandalous & a threat to our whole race is the fact that some lynxes are not too particular and have hybridised with bobcats.

I guess sexy lady lynxes are hard to find for some of us... Or were these the products of that tramp I met up with on my last trip West?? SHE wouldn't care whether it was a bobcat, mountain lion or whatever. Perhaps even a dog...
So does this make me a racist? A male chauvinist pig? Both? So what? You can't shoot me, I'm on the protected list.:D

I think the writer forgot to add "if they do" after the "at least". ( Just as I forgot to put the whole thing in Quote/Unquote :)).
We have Red wolves in Algonquin Park here. They are now protected when they wander out of the Park & hunt deer (which are absent from the Park). Hunters here are up in arms, saying these animals are coyote/wolf hybrids & therefore do not qualify for protection, that they are killing domestic stock & dogs & other pets. DNA is being tested on the wolves shot as being a danger. For instance two males one of 70 lbs & one of 80 lbs were shot after they had killed & eaten a young deer on someone's front lawn in a village near here. Those sound like gray wolves, too big for red wolves. Or they're gray wolf/coyote crosses.

Until I read this I thought "bobcat" was another name for "lynx".Well it is, but your reference was to hybridisation of different lynx species.
