Hello everyone. You may call me Firemerlin.

I am the sort of person that enjoys a good argument/debate. Up to this point, I have argued and debated with people on YouTube... which admittedly isn't the best place for intelligent conversation. So recently, I did a general search for "Intellectual Forums" and Secular Cafe was at the top of the list. So far I likey what I see :D

I look forward to exchanging interesting ideas :)

Hi Firemerlin. I sometimes comment on youtube, too.

Feel free to join in, and to start threads.

Now back to poker. I am currently 12th out of 54 players. Top 40 get payed, so playing tight, unless I hit a big hand.

There are plenty of larger forums out there, but we think ours is pretty fine. :)

Any special interests you prefer to talk about? We may be able to help direct you to some toothsome threads.

Talk to you soon. Another break in the poker, and still in. 6th out of 15, which I'm happy with.

The only other forums I've posted on were so small that conversations usually took place over several weeks with days between posts... a not so large (but still active) forum sounds good to me ;)

I like arguing religion mostly because I find organized religion amusing. I like discussing world events and politics because I find many of the actions of mankind confusing and illogical. I like music because music is awesome  I like anime because I think there's so much more imagination available through animation than live-action. I like talking science because I have aspirations to some day be a theoretical physicist.

Having lived in one place all my life, I recognize my own ignorance in many areas and so I try to temper my opinion with the knowledge that I could be wrong.

I want to know why people do what they do.

Wow big poker player huh? I don't really play much myself but I like watching from time to time. Are you playing in some kind of tournament?

Small stakes online. Came 11th in the end. Sometimes play live, too, but again small stakes.

Oh hey, someone else who'll know what I'm on about. What series do you like?

Oh I like all kinds of genre and series. Cowboy Bebop, Hellsing, Full Metal Panic!, Trinity Blood, Ghost in the Shell, Baccano!, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Full Metal Alchemist, Gun x Sword, Air, Spice and Wolf, ...

As long as it's fairly well made, good story, imaginative, I'll probably enjoy it :p

Maybe it's just me, but I don't care much for the newer anime. The last series I really enjoyed was Cowboy Bebop, and that's years old now.

During my heyday it was Evangelion, Macross (Macross 7 being my favorite), Lodoss War, Tenchi Muyo etc ... and my all-time favorite, The Irresponsible Captain Tylor :)

Cool! I find I watch a lot of anime these days, as I no longer possess a tv and good anime is easy to find on the internet. I mostly watch scifi (I like Ghost in the Shell too, and you've probably see Evangelion which is another favorite) and the better incarnations of josei and seinen, like Honey and Clover or Bartender. I like little oddities like Mushi-shi that don't really fit into a category.

Looking forward to seeing you around the forum. Posting has been a bit slower as we head into summer in the Northern Hemisphere, so having new members poking around is groovy.

Politesse has gotten me intrigued by Elfen Lied. Next time I'm in Columbus or Atlanta, I intend to find a DVD of it.

Ooo Elfen Lied is a good one. The opening scene in the first episode is one of my favorites... great way to start it.

The intro song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RaV6eDvgiG4) was on all of my burned CD's for a long time.

Is that pronounced "leed" or "lide" (like the past tense of "lie")?

And what is it about?

And why in the name of all the little fishy gods is the next video cued when that one ends something called "Hot Rock Massage Back Part 1"????? :rolling:

Like "leed". Means "song of the elves". I don't understand Japanese, alas. :) (though the title is German)

^ What Berthold said ^

If I had to describe it in my own words as I saw it, I'd say it is a bloody, gory, gruesome drama for mature audiences about the cruelty of humans, the depth of our relationships and experiences, and how those relationships and experiences shape us.

As for that massage video in the suggestions list... If the little fishy gods can shed some light on this I'm all ears... I often wonder about the way YouTube connects videos that seem to have nothing in common  :dunno:

My summary of Elfen Lied in my Question Thread, that I think perked Jobar's interest:

The story and plot are overridden with horrifying, mind-bending, stomach-curdling violence and a number of characters who seem frankly irredeemable. It has monsters in it, and like many monster stories, the monsters turn out to be more human than the humans. But it's not uncomplicated, because the monsters are also monsters and the artists make no effort to hide or ignore that fact. At the end of each episode, you find yourself thinking "That was horrible. That was just absolutely horrible. So why was it also beautiful? Why is a song like Lilium appropriate for a show like this?" The opening sequence uses a lot of Gustav Klimmt in its artwork, and I don't think it is accidental; the harsh, uncomfortable beauty of his paintings evokes a similar response.

Just so. I've found numerous short outtakes from it available on YT, usually the most gory scenes, I think. And the contrast between them and the serene beauty of "Lilium" I find deeply fascinating.

Firemerlin, when you have got to know people here you may find you have some fundamental disagreement with someone on a particular topic. In that case you might be interested in a debate. We do occasionally have them. See this forum:http://www.secularcafe.org/forumdisplay.php?f=29
