Hello,
Previous lurker but newly registered poster, I've only just started frequenting forums again, having taken a long break from doing so. I'm a blogger, frequent twitterer, computer scientist, biologist, martial artist, and nerd.
I hope to keep contributing.

Welcome zenbuffy. :)
I didn't expect that linking to your blog would actually summon you here! :)
I found your blog quite interesting as well. I've been thinking about taking a martial arts course (one that involves tossing rather than kicking and punching -- judo I suppose). The problem is that I'm as blind as a bat without my eyeglasses. I can wear contacts, I suppose. But won't those get knocked out too from me being tossed around and stuff?

Redshirt, unless you are very nearsighted indeed, you won't need glasses for any grappling classes or really any other close-quarter art.
The tricky bit (speaking as a nearsighted person myself) might be watching the instructor(s) at a distance, then applying the same thing up close. For that, you might need contacts.
IMO, judo is a good place to start if you want to learn some wrestling. It's more of a sport than an actual martial art (the actual martial art behind it is jujitsu), but you'll learn some of the latter in it anyway.

:evil:Hi zenbuffy, welcome to SC.
Good to have yet another martial artist on board (there's a few lurking around although the ninjutsu practitioners are really hard to find for some reason)
A few martial arts related discussions crop up from time to time and it's always good to have a range of opinions and experience.
Feel free to kick of your shoes and slip on your zori's.

Thanks - I'm pretty far south, just a short drive from the Wicklow mountains.

Lol! I'm very short-sighted myself, I can barely see without my glasses. I use contacts when I train and have never had any trouble with them being knocked out when I'm thrown. I do Jiu Jitsu (traditional, not brazillian) (among other things) so there's a lot of throwing! I use daily disposable lenses too, so worst comes to worst, I can just pull them out and throw them away, so they work pretty well.
Thanks for the welcomes in general guys (and girls!) :)
A belated welcome from me too.

Thank you, Jennifer. :) I'm planning a visit to the optometrist soon, so perhaps I'll invest in some. Now the challenge is finding a Jiu Jitsu class that's not far from where I live (I don't own a car).
I will also need to find the right type of class that's compatible with how I learn things. I'm a bit of a slow learner when it comes to kinesthetic (hands-on) things and I don't want to get left in the dust!
