View Full Version : Twenty Questions Game.
Let's have a game of 20 questions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twenty_Questions
The Rules are as follows:
The "answerer" thinks of an object/subject - Everyone else are "questioners"
Questioners attempt to find out what the object/subject is by posting a single question. Each Question should be numbered, so that we can keep track.
The answerer will respond to each numbered question as accurately as possible with either "yes",no", "maybe", "irrelevant" or "sometimes"- Lying is not allowed; nor are you allowed to answer perversely ['cause I know what you lot are like ;)]
If the object/subject can be guessed in 20 questions or fewer then the questioner that guesses accurately wins the game and becomes the next answerer - If we reach Q20 and the result is not known anyone can suggest a single answer and become the winner - timing to be at the discretion of the current answerer, within reason - otherwise the original answerer wins and has another turn after revealing the correct answer.
These rules may be subject to change between rounds, in order to improve the flow of the game.
OK, I'm thinking of an object...

NOT a question (well alright, yes it is, but it's one about the rules...)
A classic opening question is "animal, vegetable or mineral?"
Is it allowed and, if so, is that one or two questions?
ETA: And, while I'm at it.....recaps?
Cath B
21 Aug 2011, 09:52 PM
We always played that "animal. vegetable or mineral" was declared by the questionee (if that isn't a word it should be) at the outset and did not constitute a question.
But I guess it's up to you rog.
We always played that "animal. vegetable or mineral" was declared by the questionee (if that isn't a word it should be) at the outset and did not constitute a question.
But I guess it's up to you rog.
I'll leave it up to the answerer [questionee, if you prefer] in each round.
To get it going, I'll give you: not an animal.
ETA: And, while I'm at it.....recaps?
Anyone who feels like it can list all of the previously asked numbered questions.

(I have terrible taste in beer apparently)
Barefoot Bree
25 Aug 2011, 05:02 PM
Never had Becks that I know of. I don't care for really bitter hoppy beers, I prefer ones with lots of good malty flavor, low alcohol, and very low hop bitterness. Hard to find, especially in a commercial beer - even microbrews. That's why I had gotten into homebrewing, and hope to get back into it eventually. In the meantime, I usually just have some kind of light beer, and only drink it with food.
Oh, wait, this was a guessing game thread, wasn't it? No, not beer.

I originally thought one guess at the end per person and until the answerer get bored or no more guesses come in; but I don't think it's a major problem to let people have more than one guess with the thread being quiet as it is now - so I'd say up to the answerer again.

Barefoot Bree
26 Aug 2011, 04:17 AM
Yup, you got it, Kelly. It's a glass (mineral) bottle of vanilla extract (vegetable). The split vanilla beans - technically the fruit of the vanilla pod - are soaked in alcohol to extract the goodness. It's liquid, but you eat it, but not by itself - because it's baked into other goodies like cakes and cookies.

No, less fabricy than felt.

No, I'd definitely call velvet a fabric.
I'm scratching my brain trying to think of a non fabricy fabric :)

Out of curiosity, Octavia, what kind of animal hide apparel would NOT have been tanned? I can't think of any. Unless we've different definitions of "tanned", here.

^You can get clothes made out of rawhide, which hasn't been tanned. Some moccasins, for example, and some hats. (Wikipedia tells me that I can even get rawhide panties, but I'd rather not.)
Admittedly, I don't think there's a huge range of stuff, but I'm just narrowing it down in case Cath has picked something deliberately tricksy. ;)

I'm realising how woolly some definitions are (or at any rate my comprehension of them) - fabric, jacket .... :dunno:
I've just found jacket on wiki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacket) and see that something might be lost in translation here:-
A jacket is a type of (usually sleeved) hip- or waist-length garment for the upper torso. For clothing older than the mid-nineteenth century, a distinction is often maintained with a coat, but in many instances the terms are now interchangeable in American English. The distinction has remained in British English.

Down in this corner of the antipodes, jacket and coat are often interchangeable. But not always. Maybe we're just difficult...

Yes, though it can also be made from a closely related species.
And you need to be more specific.

Yes.
I don't really have a full grasp of what a shearling is, so maybe it could be one.
It is not specifically Scottish, though perhaps these coats were more popular and better known in the UK than in the US (though they are not British coats), though I hadn't thought that was the case when I came up with the idea.

Shearling coats, or at least what answers to that name in these parts:

The wool/fur is on the inside, and also shows along the seams, and turned-out collars and cuffs. The coats are made of smallish pieces sewn together with rough, obvious seams - with bits of fur, as stated.

The coat I'm looking at right now has some similarities to the ones you show here Bree, but they are not the same, though the fur does show at the edges and the seams are rough.
My husband bought the example I'm looking at in his hippy youth. It looks more tatty than vintage and is likely to be an example of what wiki calls a "crude imitation" since these apparently "flooded the market" .
