Welcome to the Cafe! Now that's a hell of an interesting user name. Care to share how you came up with it?

I'll bet she's got a red hat that doesn't go.

Warning..
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandles, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.
You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

One of my favorites :)

Congratulations on finding a nick that reminds us of a lot of stuff! I do hope you really wear purple.

BTW my mother had her 97th birthday tomorrow, and I've bought her a purple cardigan.

Hiya OWIP,

Welcome to the Cafe. Grab a chair and a coffee and come on in. I'd not heard the poem that most likely inspired your name, but it certainly made me smile.

And, anyway, much preferable to an old man in purple (http://www.google.at/imgres?q=hans+hermann+groer&hl=de&sa=X&rlz=1W1GGLL_de&tbm=isch&prmd=ivnso&tbnid=TMrFeU84Mz30tM:&imgrefurl=http://www.news.at/articles/1022/10/270233/schweigepflicht-groer-vatikan-neuer-zeuge-kirchenfuehrung&docid=DqW3CPUve9I2UM&w=164&h=200&ei=MetkToi3KsTMtAbx1LnACg&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=1593&vpy=106&dur=17060&hovh=160&hovw=131&tx=85&ty=88&page=1&tbnh=134&tbnw=110&start=0&ndsp=68&ved=1t:429,r:9,s:0&biw=1920&bih=977).

I think I know this user from another board. Welcome.

Thank you for all the welcoming words, everyone! <wave>

Yes, I snagged my moniker from the poem davidpbrown quoted above. The creative, comfortable, confidant, not-stuck-on-appearances attitude appealed to me. I hope to be something like that when I grow up.

My favorite color is, indeed, purple. I'm not particularly "old" yet [turning 50 in mid-october], tho my teenager facetiously insists otherwise. :P

My DH & I have been married for 26 years. We have 1 fairly sensible daughter, currently a senior in high school [12th grade], whom I enjoy boasting about, and 2 spoiled cats. We live in the NW suburbs of Chicago.

I don't like coffee, but am addicted to Diet Dr Pepper. I take daily walks when weather and schedule permit. I'm a "housewife", and volunteer at the local grade-school library. I've been making quilts (and occasionally cross-stitching) for 35 years.

I was hanging around IIDB once upon a time, but things kinda went goofy a couple years or so ago, so I wandered off.... I don't follow "politics" or "playground mindgames" very well. They make me uncomfortable....

Coffee shops, game rooms, libraries, chat rooms.... aaahhh! much more comfortable! People-watching and "eavesdropping" of the good-natured, non-malicious sort, is much more pleasant!

I knew I recognised the name! Great to see you again :yay:

Welcome to the Café. We don't go in for politics or playground mindgames here, so I'm sure you'll enjoy it :)

I nearly asked you if that was the case because I thought I recognised the name from there.

You will probably recognise a lot of people here then, because a lot of us date back to that split from II and we all left at the same time. There's a long and tortuous history that I won't bother you with that gets us to here, but anyway it's good to see you.

Hi Old Woman in Purple and welcome. :)

I've just been talking to you in another thread.

I think I remember seeing your name, and thinking of the poem, just before I left IIDB too.

I am older that you and make an effort to be an Old Woman in Purple rather than an Old Woman in Cotton, though I am more likely to be found wearing cotton than purple.

Old woman in cotton upon the doorstep
How do you live tell me how are you kept
How have you aged since the days when you leapt
In the meadow before I was born

Old woman in cotton, say why does your glance
Stab the young maidens and lads like a lance
How many years since the days when you danced
In the meadow before I was born

Old woman in cotton tell me how long
You've sat here and thought on all of the wrongs
Done you since you sang a young lassie's song
In the meadow before I was born

Old woman in cotton no longer a dove
When sunset surrounds you what do you think of
Is it the young lad that once you did love
In the meadow before I was born

Old woman in cotton upon the doorstep
How many years has your vigil been kept
How many tears have your wrinkled eyes wept
In the meadow before I was born
