Like it says, post 2 pics with some sort of tangible link and people have to guess what it is in order to post their own.

a cute starter for ten

anyway, nevermind. Just an idea (sniff)

I think it was just that nobody could figure it out.

But yeah, I was thinking in terms of shagability too :D

Anne -- is it that they've both had houses of theirs burn down?

Nolte (http://www.reuters.com/article/entertainmentNews/idUSTRE4969ML20081007)

Pacino (http://www.hollywood.com/news/Fire_disrupts_Pacino_household/1106793)

cool. i'm glad its not dead, it can be fun this one.

both played the enemy of DeNiro (Cape Fear and Heat) ?

Anne
23 Apr 2009, 07:08 PM
oooo! Those are good! This game is waaaay more open ended than I thought!

Actually, what I had in mind, was that they both turned down the role of Han Solo.

who the hell wins? Everyone is right!

Matty

first to post i guess. or pick one.

You decide, it's your game...

Oolon Colluphid

Soddit, here you go:

Anne
24 Apr 2009, 12:47 PM
both folk guitarists who changed their names?

Oolon Colluphid
24 Apr 2009, 01:38 PM
Nice try, but according to Wikipedia, Paul Simon is his real name (middle name of Frederick, apparently).

Matty
24 Apr 2009, 03:36 PM
Both play Martin dreadnoughts?
They may even both have a signature model IIRC. Simon certainly does.

Both are actors as well as songsters?

Oolon Colluphid
24 Apr 2009, 03:45 PM
Nope. But you've accidentally mentioned a name there that is the connection (and it's not Simon nor dreadnought).

Oolon Colluphid
28 Apr 2009, 12:15 PM
Give up?

The link is Martin Carthy. When both Dylan and Simon came to London in the early sixties, they both made a beeline for Carthy, who taught Scarborough Fair to both of them (later of course something of a hit for S&G), and inspiring Dylan's Girl From The North Country. Dylan also got Lord Franklin from Carthy, and used the tune for his Bob Dylan's Dream.

Incidentally, Carthy -- who should, therefore, know, after all -- is on record as saying that it's pointless to call Richard Thompson 'the British Bob Dylan': "you might just as well call Dylan 'the American Richard Thompson'". :D

As this is going so frightfully well, anyone can post next.

Matty
28 Apr 2009, 01:26 PM
didnt know that ^^ cool.

Okay an easy one.

Jan Michael Vincent and Gary Busey were in Big Wednesday together?

Matty

indeed. :)

Oolon Colluphid
29 Apr 2009, 02:00 PM
Okay, try this. As it could be tricky for just two, I'll break the rules and post a few more with the same connection. What links all these?

http://www.tonybenn.com/i/tbsqr.jpg

http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/blobs/patrickmoore_promo.jpg

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40622000/jpg/_40622359_botham_1977.jpg

One point for the general connection, two points for the more specific one.

Matty
29 Apr 2009, 03:32 PM
all Oxford grads?

Oolon Colluphid
29 Apr 2009, 03:35 PM
Nope.

If I give you a clue, you'll have to get the specific connection :D

The more general connection would mean possible inclusion of Harold Wilson and, if fictional people are allowed, Sherlock Holmes. Those pictured won something for this link.

Matty
29 Apr 2009, 04:01 PM
Outside of the day job they are all musically proficient?

Based pretty much on Holmes and Moore tbh, though didnt Benn play some sort of brass?

Oolon Colluphid
29 Apr 2009, 04:06 PM
May have done.

This is clearly tougher than I thought. But as René Magritte may have said, the link is not what it seems.

Matty
29 Apr 2009, 04:07 PM
hmmm. thinking cap time.

Oolon Colluphid
29 Apr 2009, 04:10 PM
All of them could be 'at the gates of dawn'.

Matty
29 Apr 2009, 04:19 PM
they are all pipers.............. ah i get it, they all have potatoes named after them :)

Oolon Colluphid
30 Apr 2009, 08:29 AM
Yep, potatoes. You can Fry them, plant one and Moore and Morecambe out the ground, if you have two, Both-of-am can be used...

*ahem*

I see it really was tricky, even with the Magritte, Holmes and Pipers clues. :bang: :D Try this clue:

http://content7.flixster.com/photo/11/60/13/11601369_gal.jpg

http://www.radiotimes.com/content/features/galleries/patrick-moore/03/mainImage.jpg

http://www.pipe-smokers.org/nostalgia/trivia/images/botham.gif

As Rolf would say, "Can ya see what it is yit?" :D

So, what's the more specific connection?

Anne
30 Apr 2009, 06:25 PM
This is not a link...

ohhhh...

Matty
30 Apr 2009, 06:41 PM
damn. That would have been a guess based on Fry alone at some point but i had no idea the rest smoked a pipe. I love how they take the piss out of him for eh typically old school posh things like that on QI.

that was tricky. nice one.

Oolon Colluphid
01 May 2009, 08:22 AM
The more specific connection was that they all won the prestigious and now defunct (since the ban on all tobacco advertising) Pipe Smoker of the Year award.

ETA: This provides another variant on a thought I've often had. Andy Warhol famously said about everyone being famous for fifteen minutes. I've often pointed out that many individuals are famous for fifteen people -- that they and some small group know so much about someone who ought to be famous that they're surprised nobody else has heard of them. Richard Thompson is the obvious one, with most people who've heard of him being almost manic fans, but nobody else knowing who he is. But now I see that some facts are also famous for fifteen people. As a sometime collector of antique pipes, not to mention a smoker of one myself when I have time to engage in the rituals (smoking a pipe for proper enjoyment is a good half-hour process at least) -- ie never ;) -- the fact that these guys (plus Rod Hull (), Mark Twain, Charles Darwin, Pablo Casals, Jeremy Brett, Arthur Miller, Bing Crosby, Tolkein, Edward VII and VIII, Greta Garbo...) smoked a pipe was obvious enough. Ho hum.

Since I make mine too tricky, anyone who wants can go next :)

Oolon Colluphid
01 May 2009, 08:24 AM
i had no idea the rest smoked a pipe.
Eric Morcambe and Tony Benn were, I thought, the giveaways, as they are/were often seen with their pipes, as was Harold Wilson (who didn't win the award, so I left him out).

http://content9.flixster.com/photo/11/67/10/11671015_gal.jpg

Over to the rest of you!

Matty
01 May 2009, 04:20 PM
ah. see, now you posted that it clicked for Morcombe too.

Easy Easy one before i shoot off to lunch.

Matty
05 May 2009, 02:20 PM
ah my bad. are they not even there for you or just thumbnails?

here you go. Should take about 10second to get the link.

Matty

Oolon Colluphid
05 May 2009, 03:37 PM
Heh. I got the link from just Clapton and Beck, since Page was hanging off the side of my screen.

Okay, try this:

http://home.att.net/%7Echuckayoub/jimmy_page-pic.jpg

Matty
05 May 2009, 03:40 PM
Val Doonican and Jimmy Page?

They double teamed the queen mum whilst off their tits on copious amounts of coke?

heh.

Okay, Both headed up the Royal Variety Performance?

Oolon Colluphid
05 May 2009, 03:43 PM
Ooh, good one, but no.

Think Page's early days. The question really is, what song links them?

Oolon Colluphid
07 May 2009, 11:06 AM
Oh okay. Too tricky again.

The link is Walk Tall, one of the more bizarre hits (for Doonican) that features Jimmy Page sessioning on.

Over to you again Matty (as we seem to be the only ones playing)!

Matty
07 May 2009, 01:13 PM
totally got me with that one.

Sadly, as I only recognise Atkinson (very vaguely the first lass), and the image urls are of no help with the identification, I'm all out. Johnny English, perhaps?

Matty
07 May 2009, 05:50 PM
First is the lovely Lisa Edelstein and the second one is the formerly lovely Joley Richardson
'

Johhny English was with the delectable Nathalie Imbruglia.

Oolon Colluphid
08 May 2009, 10:30 AM
Bugger! I've always been shit at faces, but how could I not recognise Cuddy and Lady Chatterley? :bang:

I guess the connection is Hugh Laurie, then. Cuddy, obviously; Blackadder, also obviously; and Joely was in 101 Dalmatians (had to look that bit up to confirm).

Matty
08 May 2009, 12:58 PM
Exactly though i didnt get the 101 Dalmations bit, i was thinking Maybe Baby but all's good.

Is cuddy the House character? I had to look her up, never seen it.

Oolon Colluphid
08 May 2009, 02:07 PM
Yup, Edelstein is Cuddy, House's boss. And if you've never seen House, get on and do so, it's a cracker.

Okay then. I hope this won't be too obscure again, but it should be fun...

Struggling a bit with this game, aren't we? :(

The link is, they're all cuts of gemstones (esp diamonds): trillian, princess, emerald, marquise, pear, heart, cushion and brilliant.

Anyone else?

Matty
11 May 2009, 02:19 PM
heh i wouldnt have got that in a million years.

Oolon Colluphid
11 May 2009, 02:46 PM
Ho hum. Just to check it was gettable, I just put emerald pear heart cushion brilliant into google, and did get plenty of diamond cut refs. Ho hum.

If I had been faster I would have gotten that one.

You're too quick Oolon, I saw that immediately after posting it and fixed it.

holy moly - is this game too brit centric or am i not smart enough? i don't think i recognize hardly any of the people in the pics in this thread :(

Matty
11 May 2009, 05:40 PM
(i dont think so becasue i have no idea who they are either)

You must have recognized uma, wyn, the woman from House, and Mr Bean no?

Anne
11 May 2009, 05:43 PM
Theya re all authors--- but I don't know if they have more in common than that fact...

Theya re all authors--- but I don't know if they have more in common than that fact...

That’s right, Anne. They have one other thing important in common and it is related to their writing.

Oolon Colluphid
14 May 2009, 03:55 PM
They all won Pulitzer prizes for their writing? ;)

Matty
14 May 2009, 04:01 PM
okay, writers,

They all wrote their most famous works under a pseudonym?
