View Full Version : Revival of Rubik's cube
We old ones of Secular remember the heyday of Rubik's Cube well. Recently there has been a revival of interest in the world's top selling puzzle toy. It never really fell off the map and Australian teenager Feliks Zemdegs holds the record for solving it - 6.65 seconds:notworthy:

The only way I was ever able to solve it was by peeling off the stickers on puting them back the correct way.

My son is a wiz at solving a Rubik's Cube. It takes him maybe a minute or two to solve no matter how jumbled up it is. Granted, that's not as good as world record speed but to me it's pretty damned impressive. He's even got a 4x4 Cube now that he taught himself how to solve.

When I was little they even made a 5x5 cube and a mini-one for those of us less skilled that was 2x2, but never could find.

I cheated - I got a book that gave a step-by-step method for solving the cube and memorized it. I still remember a lot of it, but I dunno if I could still do it all. I was never any kind of speed demon, though.
Wish I still had that book....

Only problem with Rubik's cubes is that they are a one trick pony; either you know how to solve one or you don't, and if you do, they aren't very interesting unless you happen to really like repetitive tasks.

Yeah they're like sudoku. I can't solve either, got better things to do with my time.

We had one with an interior piece that was broken allowing for easy dis-assembly and reconstruction.
I was one of those who never got it ... I could get two sides done sometimes. But I did master the pyramid one.
