View Full Version : Need ideas...

I'd like to stitch a piece to give to the city that symbolizes Buffalo moving forward to the future.
I have no ideas.
We're moving towards being a green city, without losing our past, which was pretty cool.
Anyone think of good representations of progress? I prefer art deco styling...
We're an indomitable people (during the worst storm in recent history, people still attended the hockey game, that was played without power) and we are very proud of our relationship with Canada and our place in US history (albeit minor).
Here are some older images we've used...

(I really like that one)

thoughts? Any ideas are good--- they feed ideas!

Buffalo nickel silhouette, done in green?
simplistic, I know, but it's what came to me off the top of my head.

A growing tree, each stage of growth overlapping. (what's art deco?) :p

Art deco (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Art_Deco) is clean lines and pure colors...
It combined 'primitive' art with the machine age.
Think Erte. Metropolis.

Mucha's art would make wonderful stitchery, especially in light of the first image you posted.
Heh... maybe a stitched beef on wec? lol

This thread induced me to look up John Maynard.
But, oops, you want something about the future. :)

How the Heck do you know Weck?
I'd need an original figure to stitch, though. Not copy a Mucha, as much as I love him...

Ha! I was introduced to that little piece of local grub while visiting Buffalo for job training a few years ago. Even after removing all of the coarse salt, it was still a bit salty. The bread looked like a powdered sugar donut it was so thickly covered with salt! And there was nothing else on it except meat.

There should have been gravy (au jus) and horseradish!
But yeah, it's salty meat on a salty bun with salty gravy.
What do you expect? It's bar food!

You mean, something like these (http://ipp.boku.ac.at/pz/uebungen/hg/weckerl_1.jpg) is part of local foodcraft? :notworthy:
There's also an Austrian actor named Peter Weck, but I don't suppose you meant him.

There probably was "gravy" with it. It was take out brought to me. I think there might have been au jus, and had it been, it looked like tea, thus I didn't use it. I probably asked for plain yellow mustard if it was around. And I don't do horseradish. Blech.
I wasn't aware it was "bar" food. I was just told it was a local thing and since it was my first time staying in Buffalo I should give it a go.
Here in St. Louis, the local "food" is toasted raviolis. I've had them several times over the last few years.
My wife calls me a Cajun snob. I get persnickety for instance when I see restaurants or grocery items labeling New Orleans as Cajun food. That's tantamount to calling a Welshman, English. I'm also very hard to impress when it comes to food - specifically restaurant food.

Sorry.
I'm not a real local, and I'd never have given you that. Yuck!
Although there are good ones out there.
But yeah, they were developed in German American bars. Sold cheaply, they make you drink morr beer. The rest of the world has peanuts and popcorn.
Did you get wings?
mmm... Cajun is good. I think it's a shame you didn't get better food here, because we really have good stuff...

I was offered wings but declined. Heh... I'm an atypical Cajun in that I hate getting messy when I eat... and wings are often messy.
I was only there for a couple of days, by myself, holed up in a hotel. I was picked up in the morning, brought to work and returned back to the hotel at the end of the work day. It was also the middle of winter.
I make a mean pot of gumbo and also chicken fricassee... which reminds me, that's what my wife wants tonight... fricassee... I need to get the thighs out to defrost!!! Not to mention make some roux.

Sounds like you had a sucky time. Sorry for that. Does not reflect well on our image...
