I know a youngish couple that planned an informal, comfortable sort of wedding. It was going to feature an ornate, multi-tiered pizza.

The Mothers intervened, explaining how a wedding MUST be done.

The young couple then picked out a pair of wedding rings, and had their noses pierced. When the rent-a-preacher said "Do you take this man to be your lawful meat stick?" the bride would say "Oh Yes Yes Yess Yesssss!" Then the groom would lift the chain attached to his wedding nose ring and clip it to hers, while everybody cried with emotion.

The Mothers backed off.

The Happy Couple compromised with a cake that had icing, and The Mothers refrained from critiquing their choice of wedding garb. And they all Lived Happily Ever After.

We're just going to get married by the county clerk here, hopefully the afternoon of the day before we leave for the trip. My only wacky idea is to threaten to go over the deep end and make a bipolar scene every time anyone tries to add bells and whistles to things or gets upset about our plans. There's only so wrong it can go if I limit my mother to 11 people (3 are kids) and her only choices of venue are a restaurant or her house. We'll dress nicely, stay for a few days and even stay at her house if she lets me keep the dog there. Otherwise we're getting a motel somewhere that allows pets or camping. She just has to deal with it.

I've had some wild ones but they all involved a lot of drugs, nudity and very loud hippie music. These days it's more likely to be a barbecue by the pool with an acoustic bluegrass band. We've already sowed our wild oats and enough to cover a few dozen other people as well. We don't even drink.

We just pulled off a reverse surprise party for Bobby's 60th. On Friday, Thalia and family came in to surprise him for his BD. He was tickled that they came to see him. On Saturday afternoon, first his Mom and nephew and family came by to say happy birthday. Then his son and family showed up from FL, and he was REALLY surprised. After that, people just kept coming in, and out came the food and cake and he found himself in the middle of a birthday party. He was so busy being surprised by each new face he had no time to grumble about 'no fuss'. He smiled a lot that day. One of his employees made a naughty cake which was made him laugh.

After things were in full gear, I sat next to him, and whispered 'Surprise'. He replied 'No Doubt'. It made him very, very happy.

I love it! It almost makes me want to change my mind and have a wedding just so that my friends can do the Deadhead version in tiedyes. My family would croak :D

I've been to a tiedye wedding. The parents of the bride were the only people there not in tiedye. Even the minister wore a tiedye t-shirt. It was fun.

Beyelzu and Ensign Steve are getting married in Dec. I thought it would have been fun for them to get married at my annual Halloween party. They aren't, but either way I think they will have a really fun wedding, I'm not sure I'll be able to make it though.

This is one of the times I really wish that Joe could dance. I could have so much fun doing something like that but he would die of embarrassment.
