View Full Version : Desert Island cds

A thread inspired my new phone, which has a music player included (MP3 among others).
Desert Island Discs is a very long running Brit radio show, in which guests have to pick seven records they could take with them to a desert island.
I currently have 7 cds ripped to it.
My choices were to some degree influenced by what came to hand, looking through a collect of about 350 cds.
But of the ones that came to hand, I was selective.
I now have on the player 'After Bathing at Baxters' by Jefferson Airplane, 'Modern Times' Bob Dylan, 'The Tumbler' John Martyn, 'Eine Kleine Machmusic' Mozart, 'Liege and Lief' Fairport Convention, 'Jack Orion' Bert Janch' 'Bert and John' Bert and John.
If I were to go through my whole collection, some, but not all, would be different.
But if you had 7 cds only, which ones would they be?
David (reminds himself to look for 'Kind of Blue' tomorrow)

7. The David Grisman Quintet
6. Highway 61 Revisited, Bob Dylan
5. My Goal's Beyond, John McLaughlin
4. Beethoven Piano Concertos, V. Horowitz
3. Rei Momo, David Byrne
2. Rainbow Bridge, Jimi Hendrix
1. Layla and Other Love Songs, Derek and the Dominos
Back in the days of vinyl, I wore the grooves out of most of these. And others, like After the Gold Rush and Workingman's Dead. Had to draw the line somewhere.

I haven't thought of my list yet but I want the island right next to yours so that I can listen to your music too.
I started a thread like this once on a forum where I was the only female. Instead of focusing on music they spent the entire thread figuring out how to survive on their island and how to invade each other for supplies when they needed them. My image never went further than lying under a palm tree eating a mango and listening to music and the ocean. I never figured out if it was a gender thing or if they were just weird.

I tried to see if there was an equivalent for men in your country but all I can find are what foreign women think. This one reminded me of you.
"You see, when a Brit, Chinese or Indian holds you, he tells you: 'You're beautiful and I love you.' When a Czech man holds me, he says, 'You're beautiful, I love you, but you've got to do something about those love handles.'" (http://www.arellanes.com/archives/000539.html)
The forum that I mentioned had no other women because the conservatives were so obnoxious and sexist that they chased them off. I was friends with almost all of the liberal guys so I stuck around for years and fought back. They were mean but stupid so it was kind of fun. Then they got mad and started causing problems in my real life and one of them was following me around so I had to give up too. It wasn't worth that much not to be chased away and that's when I found IIDB. The only woman that has shown up since is a born-again conservative christian.

In my scenario my island is going to be within hearing distance of Frazier and Matty.
Frazier, I'll put After the Gold Rush and Workingman's Dead on mine since you've covered a few I would bring. At least one of mine is going to be a triple CD Dead concert.

4. Stop Making Sense - Talking Heads

Good idea- My to do list includes ripping the 5 cd set that contains the music used in The Movie onto MP3.

Here’s my lot…
Doghouse Music – Seasick Steve
Floodland – Sisters of Mercy
Help! – The Beatles
Let Love In – Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds
Operation: Mindcrime – Queensryche
Symphony No. 7 – Beethoven
War of the Worlds – Jeff Wayne
I’m not sure I’d survive on only seven albums.

Hmm. Tough Decision.
Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment
The Joshua Tree - U2
Close to the Edge - Yes
Throwing Copper - Live
Tangents - The Tea Party
Creedence - Greatest Hits - Creedence Clearwater Revival
Moving Pictures - Rush
Oh boy. Only seven? :/
If I could custom-make seven CD's it would be awesome. I'd like to include Bach's Toccatta & Fugue in D-minor on on of those Austrian Flenntrop organs as well.
Seven CD's is too little. To hell with arbitrary limitations! :)

I'm not always real into music. I generally put my husband in control. But here's my stab at it.
Carmina Burana - Carl Orff
The Ring of the Nibelung - Wagner
Nutcracker Suite - Tchaikovsky
Flood - They Might be Giants
The Downward Spiral - NIN
The Open Door - Evanescence
Sehnsucht - Rammstein
I think that just about covers all my moods. Although depending on what day it is, I might end up swapping Flood for The Presidents of the United States of America 's self-titled first album... and I might swap out Evanescence for Left of the Middle by Natalie Imbruglia.

06 Aug 2009, 12:45 AM
1. New York - Lou Reed
2. Screamadelica - Primal Scream
3. Second Coming - Stone Roses
4. Started out with nothing and i still have most of it left - Seasick Steve
5. Highway61 revisited -Bob Dylan
6. Doolittle - The Pixies
7. the Basement Tapes - Bob Dylan and the Band
check back in 10minutes and i could swap just about any of those of those quite easily for:
There Goes Rhymin Simon - Paul Simon
The Last Waltz - The Band
Paris Texas - Ry Cooder
Rage against the machine - RATM
Complete Madness- madness
and I might swap out Evanescence for Left of the Middle by Natalie Imbruglia. Worth it just for the album cover IMO :)
His Noodly Appendage

1: Hypnotize - System of a Down
2: Mezmerize - System of a Down
3: Toxicity - System of a Down
4: <pretty much any techno>
5: Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites (preferably Rostropovich)
6: The Saracen and the Dove - Orlando Consort
7: Canzoni e danze - Piffaro

No but it sounds about the same. These were bitter, angry and old far right wing men in a town that's probably 95% liberal. The only place they had to get their frustration out was online and I represented all that they hated. I was a childless feminist who ran a nonprofit to serve people they hated having here and I worked on and off for government. They weren't very bright so it was easy to make them look like fools. A few of them hit on me and when I turned them down it became vicious. I figured it was better to be harassed by them than it would be to be such miserable morons.
It's odd that you mention it now. I had a dream that one of them had found me and joined here last night and I was begging the admins to ban him.

You can, but I'd immediately leave if any of them showed up. At least one of them really scared me and he lives too close for comfort. There is a Libertarian there I'd love to see here because he's so long winded, boring and tedious that no one had the patience to even get through those stupid walls of text never mind respond to them after the first few times. There were also a few great guys that I'd love to see here but not enough to log back in to that hellhole and remind the idiots that I exist. I doubt too many of them even post there anymore because it's so lame. The newspaper that it was attached to was so ashamed of it that they cut off the link and left them flloating around out there with no connection to anything.
One of my CDs would be some multi-volume Dylan compilation so I get as many songs as possible.

I've been struggling to come up with a list of 7 as I usually 'mix 'n match' what I listen to. Let's see if I can do it:
1. Discipline - King Crimson
2. I Sing the Body Electric - Weather Report
3. Romantic Warrior - Return to Forever
4. No More Heroes - The Stranglers
5. Animals - Pink Floyd
6. Close to the Edge - Yes
7. Brain Salad Surgery - Emerson Lake & Palmer

Methinks
1.) Sunday at the Village Vanguard - Bill Evans
2.) Live after Death - Iron Maiden
3.) Live in Strattpeffer - Clive Carroll (a bootleg but one of my favourites - English folk guitarist)
4.) Tannhauser Overture - Richard Wagner (not strictly speaking a cd - but I don't really like anything else by him and I really like the overture)
5.) The Koln Concert - Keith Jarrett
6.) Piano Concerto in Dm - Sergei Rachmaninov
7.) London Calling - The Clash

I have a problem with this thought experiment, because so much of my musical taste has to do with using music to deal with my feelings about what is going on around me in the world. And if the world were no longer a part of my world, then I'm not sure I would even need music. I might be perfectly happy just listening to the ocean waves, the bird songs, and the crickets. I mean, who needs Johnny Rotten if you're not feeling all angsty about living with people?

I'll just pretend I have a radio tuned to a world news station...
1) Lou Reed - Between Thought and Expression: The Anthology (haha i cheated)
2) Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane, Over the Sea
3) Arcade Fire - Funeral
4) The Clash - London Calling
5) The Clash - Sandinista!
6) David Bowie - Scary Monsters
7) Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks Here's the Sex Pistols
That's 7, but I just kind of started thinking of albums and stopped when I got to 7. There might be others I'm not thinking of that would come in higher.

revision #2
Removing the Allman Brothers and Willie Nelson
Inserting a yet to be named Marshall Tucker Band Album (probably a best of)
I prefer the Allman Brothers and Willie but only got a few slots and Marshal Tucker covers alot of what I like in both. C/W and southern country blues.
This opens up a slot where I can add London Calling by the Clash.
Thinking of replacing the Stones with something by the Who (Quadrophenia or Who's Next). Stuck with Sticky Fingers for now (pun intended).
Still not sure if I should stay with Floyd or go with something by Yes, just because Floyd is darker and well, my lineup could use a bit more optimism.

A good decision. I have thought of other stuff that I really couldn't live without since my list, like Bob Marley and Roger Waters.
