Awk! I'm already discussing this at TR. (http://talkrational.org/showthread.php?p=409236#post409236)
What the fuck you doing over there?? :D

Maybe I should have said "great minds think alike."

You know Benedict Arnold? He's considered a hero on this side of the pond.

For real??? I never even thought of it like that. Wow!

I'm probably stretching it a bit to call him a "hero", because he eventually fell out of favour here, too.

I just never thought about how the British must feel about him. Here, if you call someone a Benedict Arnold, it is an insult.

I'm British, and I only vaguely recognise the name. I presume he was an American who went over to the British during the War of Independence?

Yeah, a general who switched sides. He's basically the American "Judas".

Ayup. He won some crucial victories and did not get the recognition he though he deserved. So, he switched sides. Let me see if I can find a short article about him.

I think a recall poll is in order too.

IIRC, those crucial victories were so crucial that the rebels almost certainly would not have won without him. He was never able to contribute as much to the loyalist side as he had contributed to the rebel side.

When my parents took us to Savannah, Georgia, in 1964, my 3-year-old brother was chattering away in a restaurant. The waitress came over and said, "Listen to that little Yankee talk!"

Almost 100 years after the Civil War, and we were still "Yankees".

Oh, yeah. That is serious stuff down here.

Hey, I'm in Canada, not Europe. What else am I supposed to call the side that happened to win your Revolutionary War? It's not as if "rebel" is inaccurate, or anything. And I'm not going to use the bullshit term "patriots". Sheesh.

You know, of course, that there are still families in Canada from whom everything they had was confiscated by the rebels, and who are still awaiting compensation after 230+ years? :D

Get in line. The government owes the American Indians billions. It was put in "trust", and now there are hundreds of CPA's trying to figure out the exact amount to present to Congress.

Good point there. And Canada isn't innocent on that score, either.

(You'll notice what I wrote for my "location".)

Interesting! I looked it up and read about the treaty that was rejected.

It's one of the many reasons I'm so glad to not be there anymore.
