For me it had to be Risk.

World domination with dice and cards. Never bettered.

Hero quest was pretty sweet.

Right now, we have 30+ board games in our closet.

Taboo is prob my fav. (even if there is no board)

Risk was great, but it was just a diversion compared to it's big brother Axis & Allies :)

Settlers of Catan is another great boardgame that belongs in anyone's top ten.

Mah Jongg.

Even if you're doing badly you can still enjoy the elegance of the pieces and layout.

Just thought - Mah Jongg doesn't have a board and is essentially a version of rummy.

But I'll stick with it anyway.

Mah Jongg.

I frustrate the b/f and kids with playing MahJongg on the pc for hours and hours and hours... They cannot conceive that I'm opting for such a boring game instead of playing something INTERESTING.

Love the game. :D

We used to play it as a family game though not for some years (must get it out again this winter). My father-in-law made a beautiful set of tiles.

When my youngest was five or six he learnt to double large numbers in his head by insisting on calculating the scores - he used to pace the room feverishly while doing so - very entertaining!

Does chess count? It always has and always will be my favorite game, of any kind, period.

But if we are looking for more brand name type board games than I would say Scrabble. I have a lot of fun memories from that game.

Chess is probably the greatest board game, ever.

Scrabble was my favorite. I always won because I could spell much better than the rest of my family.

Shutup, Preno. I know that isn't saying much. :p

Chess.

I also like the Settlers of Catan (and all the expansions).

Risk and Axis and Allies are ok, but if I wargame I prefer more in depth games like Flat Top. Unfortunately, it's really hard to find the time for something like that.

Star Fleet Battles is more of a miniatures game, but it's one of my favorites of that genera. I seem to have a knack for making very good ships for a given displacement. My all time best was a heavy cruiser I made that was undeafeted in single combat against ships of similar displacement, and was more than once one of the last few ships still 'standing' after a major battle. (I wound up dubbing it the COWA class cruiser. COWA = Can O WhoopAss.) :D

I loved Monopoly as a kid.
I like Scattergories and right now I'm digging Apples to Apples as a cool family and party game.

Clue.

My family, after being forced to be serious while playing by my dad, got it down to a science. We didn't even use a board after a while.

We have a board game here called Balderdash. Is anybody familiar with it?

I've recently started playing the LOTR board game designed by Knizia, and I have found it a great deal of fun. It's a cooperative board game, so the players (who play hobbits from the novel) win or lose as a team, and try to outdo previous scores. The game is a refreshing change from games where players compete head-on against each other.

Years ago, I occasionally played an outerspace wargame called Star Fleet Battles, based loosely on Star Trek. It was very rule-heavy, but I always played with experienced players who knew the rules. It was also a lot of fun.

By the way, if you want to learn about every board game in existence, check out one of my favorite sites:

Pandemic.

Even though it's recent, it's a co-op boardgame that plays fast and simple, and you get plenty of tension as you run around trying to stop the world from dying. It's great.

Lots of Scrabble fans here I notice. It's my favorite too, followed by Mahjongg, though I haven't played either in quite some time.
