A friend of mine has a strange issue with alcohol. Whenever she drinks alcohol, even modest amounts, the next day her nails hurt, eventually separating from the nail bed. Things return to normal in the absence of drinking in a few days. She has consulted a few doctors but no one could figure this out. What could it be?

Maybe a rare kind of allergic reaction? I'm not sure either.

Very strange. Never heard the like.
Does she have any other adverse reactions to drinking? And how much does she drink?
If I had something like that happen, I wouldn't rest comfortably until I knew wtf was going on!
My husband has cattarh the day after drinking.

Is that a type of brutal hang-over?
Most people aren't fortunate enough to have weird reactions to alcohol, so they keep consuming and slowly wreck their health.

No other reactions. She has been drinking quite a long time but this issue only showed up about 3 years back. This happens with as little as half a glass of wine. Usually she won't have more than a glass of wine a week since the pain in the nails is bad enough to stop her from doing anything that puts pressure on them.

How can she be sure that alcohol is the problem? Maybe something else is associated with occurences that is more subtle and easily overlooked. It might even be something else in the wine. I had a friend who was very allergic to the sulphites used in certain kinds of white wine, as well as everything else they are used in. A plate of salad could make her quite ill.

She has experimented a fair bit in the last 3 years on the issue. It happens with vodka, gin, rum, beer, wine and every alcoholic drink. It does not happen with anything else such as bread / fruit juices, etc. It is also worse if the drink is stronger.

Vitamin A deficiency, which may be caused by alcohol, may affect the skin, too (link (http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/v/vitamin_a_deficiency/symptoms.htm#symptom_list)).
Just my wild guess; it would be an extraordinary case, especially considering the very moderate intake.
