Got caught because they used their own car with a memorable number plate

The car in which the four carried out their surveillance operation had a personalised number plate.

The licence plate of James Snell’s blue BMW read: “J4 MES”. It proved extremely memorable to passers-by outside a branch of the Halifax in Cardiff. It proved extremely useful to the police in tracing the culprits.

Oh, that reminds me of the Volvo I saw in the school parking lot today. The plate read ...

LOLVO

Very clever, I thought.

Woman tries to steal puppy at gunpoint (http://www.smh.com.au/national/woman-tries-to-steal-puppy-at-gunpoint-police-20090928-g7wf.html?autostart=1)

Just happened yesterday:

A Kellyville woman who placed a for-sale ad for a Chihuahua received an unexpected response from a would-be purchaser, who allegedly pulled a gun and demanded the dog, saying she needed love.....

Ms Johnson's security-guard father Graham, 59, was sitting next to the woman and seized the gun, restraining her....

Ms Johnson ran into the next room to get help from her brother Blake, an off-duty police officer from The Hills Local Area Command, who helped to restrain the woman.

This just goes to show that jailtime, death penalty, etc, are in now way a deterrent, because you'll always get fuckwits who do stupid shit. :D

reminds me of that bank robber who pushed a note over the counter saying "I have a gun, if you raise the alarm or fail to comply with my demands i'll shoot you. Put the money in hte bag"

The cashier did so, the robber left, and the woman called the police, and then turned over the note to realise he'd written it on the back of an envelope. The police visit the address on the envelope and catch the dude red handed with the money. Dipshit had used an envelope from one of his own bills or something.

The bank across from where my father worked was robbed quite often. Usually by some pretty dumb criminals. One time the crooks opened the bag setting off the paint inside, but still left the scene. Police were able to follow the trail of paint to where the criminals were.

I liked this one http://www.hollywoodrag.com/index.php?/weblog/comments2/ozzy_osbourne_sucks_in_the_criminals/.

There have been a number of successful variants, but that was the first one I found when I googled.
