View Full Version : A linguistic challenge

“Translation company seeks speakers of ‘Glaswegian English’ with knowledge of vocabulary, accent, nuances, to meet interpreting needs of clients who find it an unexpected challenge,” it read. A proud Glaswegian might reply indignantly: “Awayinbileyirheid, yabamye.” (“I must take exception to the position you are taking.”)
Anyone remember Stanley Baxter's Parliamo Glasgow?

It's locally called 'the patter' which is also the name of a journal which collects the language. Scotland is rich in variation and neologism.

I used to work with a guy from Falkirk. I could never understand more than about half of what he said.
Luckily he seemed to understand my southern US accent OK.
I worked with people from various parts of Scotland and didn't have much trouble except with the denizens of Fife. I didn't understand them and they didn't understand me.

I hope that we don't lose our regional dialects and accents to the leveling force of TV and movies. I know that my own southern accent is far less pronounced than was my grandfather's, or even my father's.

I used to know a few words of Gaelic but have forgotten most of it. The maternal side of my family is from Inverness though and usually when I hear someone from Glasgow speak to me I have a puzzled look on my face and I don't catch much of what they're saying. My ex's family was from Glasgow, though none had a particularly heavy lilt.

We actually had an English teacher from Glasgow for a semester, which was pretty lol. At first we were like, what language is he even speaking, but then we got sort of used to it. I'd say I'm comfortable with most forms of Scottish English I've come across.

It tends to get worse if alcohol is involved but perhaps that's not particular to the Scots. :dunno:
