View Full Version : Sharia law in the UK
We already have rubber-stamping by courts of arbitration in family law by Sharia courts. Now we have a zealot wanting women stoned, although he slightly backtracked when his proposal caused a shitstorm.

Councillor Atiq Malik, (Democratic Conservative Group), wrote two blogs, one on the UK Polling Report website and one on the Conservative Home website. Both read: "If Muslims living in the UK are happy that disputes be decided by Sharia courts then what?
"The reason why male gets more share than women is that male members of the family have the responsibilty to provide living expenses to female members of the family.
"If an unmarried woman has an affair she is lashed 100 times. If a married woman has an affair she is stoned to death. What is wrong in it?"
BTW, it's worth mentioning for anyone who will be in the UK on 7 March that there is going to be a demo against Sharia law in Britain:
It starts at North Terrace, Trafalgar Square, 3:30–4:30pm for a symbolic demonstration followed by a march to Conway Hall from 4:30–5:30pm.
A public meeting entitled Sharia Law, Sexual Apartheid and Women's Rights will be held from 6:00–8:00pm at Conway Hall, 25 Red Lion Square, London WC1R 4RL. Speakers include: Yasmin Alibhai-Brown (Journalist and British Muslims for Secular Democracy Chair), Naser Khader (Democratic Muslims Founder), Kenan Malik (Writer and Broadcaster), Maryam Namazie (One Law for All Spokesperson), Fariborz Pooya (Iranian Secular Society and Council of Ex-Muslims of Britain Chair), and Carla Revere (NSS vice-president and chair of the Lawyers' Secular Society).
You don't have to be a Muslim to join in. They're keen to get support from non-Muslim Britons.

AFAIK, there's no movement afoot in the US to move our courts to accept Islamic law.
Suppose I can own and whip slaves in my home country and its approved by my religious book? Should I expect that I can do that regardless of the country in which I live?
Idiots.

They tried it in Ontario and nearly got it accepted. I was involved in worldwide demos outside Canadian embassies protesting against it.

There are movements in the US though to get the courts to accept "God's law" or biblical law.
Remember the 10 commandments judge in Alabama, Roy Moore? He's still out there.

I was on jury duty a few years back, and we got the choice of affirmation or swearing on a religious book. IIRC, only 2 or 3 out of the twelve chose the religious option.

The Sharia law being ratified by Western nations is much more atrocious than the nonsense about swearing on a bible or presidential speeches that end with God Bless the United States.
The latter is nonsense but is more of less harmless. The former should be anathema to anything civilized. A civilized society should say to Muslims who want that to GTFO.
The same goes to those who want insulting Islam (or any other religion) to be a crime.

Very true, Stout Drinker.
I guess I missed that Sharia law actually has a chance in the UK. That just blows my mind.

It doesn't have any chance at all, at least not in Scotland. For it to be proper arbitration, it must conform to the principles of our law and that incorporates the Human Rights legislation.

Am I the only one who saw that as "first husband's donkey" and had to do a doubletake?
No, I did too.
I'm finding it unbelievable that they're even talking about this.

 It does look a bit like it!
We can just say "I affirm" if we like.

Well, as the bible says, spare the rod and spoil the child......:bang:
I agree it's bullshit, but don't think it can't happen here.
It wasn't so long ago here that a couple of church leaders beat a little boy so badly his kidneys failed.
