Several months back the Maine legislature drafted a law that would allow civil marriage for same sex couples. The bill was signed into law. The law unnecessarily states that religious institutions are exempt and even allow for public Justices of the Peace to abstain from performing same sex marriages.

But there is a citizens veto on the ballot for Nov 3.

As usual, it's the God-bots who closely resemble the Taliban who are against.

The Catholic Church in Maine has greatly funded the Yes on 1 campaign to repeal the law. More evidence that the Catholic Church is evil.

Here is a sample of the crap that the Christian Taliban are spewing.

Well, this poll shows Maine as 3rd to the bottom among the 50 US states on the question: "Is religion an important part of your daily life"

All of New England (Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut) is in the bottom 10.

There's a lot of crazy (and flat out stupid) hate and bigotry in the comments to that article, cf. There's also a lot of good stuff.

I decided to test how much importance of religion correlates with voting Republican, so I copied the importance values into a spreadsheet as numbers (1 = least, 5 = most), and also copied in the numbers for the 2008 Presidential election.

There was a significant correlation between voting Republican and considering religion important, though there were a few outliers. The least religious pro-Republican states were Alaska, Wyoming, and Idaho, while the most religious pro-Democratic state was Hawaii (though it's a 2, it comes out that way because it was the most pro-Democratic state).

It's a great shame that we don't get to vote on disestablishment of the Catholic Church in the way they get to vote in repealing this law

?

In Scotland the established church is the Presbyterian Church and in England the CofE. Did you mean either of these?

Of course, the RCC is the established church in the Republic of Ireland and in Poland and Slovakia and so forth and has concords with a few more states.
