Hello, BB! I shall be keeping an eye on you. You ought to know that in a previous incarnation I was a whip-cracking schoolmistress. Hope you enjoy Secular Café.

Welcome beamishboy.

I was late to discover 'The Hunting of the Snark', so first came across the words 'beamish boy' in another literary context, many years ago.

The gentleman so called was not among the brightest, though he was good at scripture, as I recall.

Welcome again.

David

If it had been The Hunting of the Snark, he'd no doubt be called Boojum. Right author; wrong poem. It's Jaberwocky. :D

Nah, 'twas Shakespeare.

Bugger! Of course it was! I'm still waking up.

Anyone know who the other beamish boy was?

Someone from here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beamish,_County_Durham)?

But I'm hoping it's someone who drinks this:

To the best of my knowledge, there's only one beamishboy, the one and only.

You mustn't believe everything you hear. As the Bard says, "Though thou be chaste as ice and pure as snow, thou shalt not escape calumny". Thus was the beamishboy falsely calumnised.

Oolon, I'm surprised at you!

I'll give you a couple of clues. The other person who was called beamish boy was so called on a couple (at least) of occasions by his aunt Dahlia, and his second name was Wilberforce.

I suppose it's just possible that you are calumnised, but are you really pure as snow? Search your conscience before answering, as you shall answer at the dreadful day of judgment.

Calumny. Hmmm.

Partial to the term obloquy itself....

Welcome Beamish.

Overkill on the clues David!

Though TBH I'm a bit light on the Jeeves; I prefer the goings-on with Clarence, ninth earl, and his beloved Empress.

I didn't know Bertie's second name was Wilberforce although the formidable Aunt Dahlia is one person I certainly can remember.

It seems for his final book (the one he died before completing), he wanted to bring all the threads together. Jeeves and Wooster were to drive to Blandings Castle!!! What a pity he died way too soon.

I really didn't know Bertie was called beamish boy by his Aunt Dahlia. But let me assure you that THIS beamishboy is not at all like the bungling Wooster. I'm every inch the equal to Jeeves after he's had a large plate of fish.

They're good, but IMO the books are better, because Wodehouse is able to write seeming trivia with an effortless touch and incredibly good English prose.

Do not read Wodehouse if you have any desire to be a writer.

You will never put pen to p. again.

I remember once making a tape of the John Coltrane quartet, featuring the drummer Elvin Jones, for someone.

He reported back to me that he had played the tape to an aspiring drummer, who put his sticks down for a long time.

Wodehouse's writing is almost devoid of content. But his shortcomings in that direction are more than made up for by his style.
