The Madison-based Freedom From Religion Foundation is spending $2,100 on six signs appearing for up to two months inside 50 buses. Each sign has a quotation questioning religion or giving reasons for not believing.

A quote from the late actress Butterfly McQueen, who appeared in the movie "Gone With the Wind," says, "As my ancestors are free from slavery, I am free from the slavery of religion."

In response to the ads, Pilgrims Covenant Church in Monroe said this week it purchased space on the outside of 11 Metro Transit buses for an ad quoting Psalm 14, verse 1: "The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God."

The church's ads cover a large part of one side of each bus.

That is dumb beyond dumb.

Seriously.

I am glad I am pagan. I don't care what anyone is and don't think anyone should convert! :D

Much the same thing has happened in London- there's a link to a story about it on that page.

Me, I'm glad to see it. All my life I've put up with church signs that say things incredibly stupid, blind, dogmatic, or hateful to those not of their faith; or all four at once. Maybe some competition will make them think up better signs.

I stopped my membership in FFRF because I find their message too caustic. They just seem obsessed with being negative. Like all other human constructs, religion has both negative and positive offerings.

I like some of the American and British Humanist campaigns. Remember the Xmas message that said something like, Who needs a god, just be good for goodness sake? I like that one, although I have atheist friends that thought it was offensive. I also like the one that says something like: "Don't have a god belief? You're not alone." To me, those messages aim to reach out to non believers rather than antagonizing religious people. There are already too many antagonistic folks on the other side. I don't want to lower myself to that level, if I can help it. Sometimes I can't help it. :D
