Anyone else a fan?

I've been to loads of live fights over the years, including a few big ones. The last major one I went to was Mayweather v Hatton in Dec 07.

I'm going over to my dad's shortly to watch Marco Antonio Barrera v Amir Khan, which I think is a fairly even match up. Khan is younger and bigger, but he has a fragile chin and Barrera has been a great champion, even if he is back end now.

I've never really enjoyed watching people damage each others' brains.

I'm ambivalent about it.

On the one hand, if you watch the pre Vietnam controversy fights of Ali, it's art.

I can understand the sort of Hemingway POV.

OTOH, other things being equal, it seems to me preferable that arts and sports, both, don't entail either suffering brain damage and/or inflicting it.

I enjoy watching two good boxers go at it. It really can be like art. But at the same time I am completely aware of the potential damge they are doing and it makes me feel a bit guilty for watching. I would probably feel less guilty if all boxing was the three-round, head-gear wearing variety.

I also enjoy watching MMA matches, but I think they actually do less damage as the refs are pretty quick to stop them. But there is still a little guilt there.

I admire the skill and conditioning these guys have.

I think professional boxing allows too many injuries, though I suppose that's inevitable if one is going to score the match on anything other than points.

I boxed through my teen years and did pretty well in my division but I've never boxed in a ring without headgear, probably wouldn't. 3 minute rounds are insanely physically demanding. I don't know how they could do it for 12 rounds.

I never watch it on tv. Of course, I don't really watch tv.
