A quick hello from down in sunny cornwall. I am an ex jw escaped the lunacy after waking up a number of years ago. Originally I am a Northerner but came down here 8 years ago. I am a member of a armature drama group and spend my time there building sets and stage managing plays. I do have the northern trait of being as diplomatic as a sledge hammer through a window especially when I get the bit between my teeth on any of my numerous pet hates. I am also a fan of real ale witc i consume in moderation in fact I am heading to the pub a short while.

Welcome to the Cafe, dustbin. We have a lot of British members and staff, but the board is an interesting mix of people from all over the world; most of us, I think, are American. Most of us are also freethinkers; some 'from birth', some who have escaped from various denominations (Southern Baptist, for me, back at age 15; 40 years ago, now.)

Hope you enjoy the conversations here. :)

Hi dustbin, good to see you here, and glad to see you escaped the JWs. One of our mods, nygg, was also a JW in the dim and distant past.

I have to say that I don't think that you could teach our resident expat Cornwallian anything about sledgehammer diplomacy, though:D

If you want to put that to the test you might try a post expressing the view that Brian May is a great guitarist:)

That's a northern trait? I understand that attitude just fine, it comes quite natural to me. The family name hails from Somerset, but once in North America, it got heavily diluted with Scots influence....does Scots count for inherited 'sledgehammer diplomatic skill'?

Welcome aboard....I'm glad you escaped. Have you been properly shunned?

Hi dustbin.

It's many years since I was in Cornwall. I remember Padstow and Looe as lovely.

Hi dustbin.

It's many years since I was in Cornwall. I remember Padstow and Looe as lovely.

One of the nicest holidays I ever had was spent in Penzance. We happened upon Mazey Daze, a neo-pagan celebration of the summer solstice. They even had a rag dragon wending through town as part of the grand promenade (parade) through town.

We did spend a night in St. Ives, but it was miserable...because the seagull chicks nesting on the rooftops had hatched and the crying, adult and chick, went on ALL....NIGHT....LONG. It's a beautiful seaside town, though.

Truro was a drag, but that was because the bus transfers were...ill-timed.

Tintagel was a delight. Arthurian legend veritably infuses the place, as can be clearly seen by the presence, alone on a finger of land into the sea just outside of town, of King Arthur's Excali-Bar. We stayed one night in the local HI hostel, which was the converted manager's office of the former slate quarry about a quarter mile south out of town. Our second night was in a B&B in town, because the hostel closed one night a week. The beds at the hostel were better. But hey...I had my first clotted cream tea in Tintagel. With real clotted cream, not that faux stuff they serve up in Canuckistan. The ruins were high quality ruins - and such a picturesque locale.

Of course..."The North" is not without its attractions, too. York has to be one of the most worthwhile tourist traps I've ever been lured into and trapped.

Hey, dustbin :)

Your username made me laugh--why on earth would someone call themselves a dustbin? :rolling:

Hiya Dusty, from a bit east-ish up the southern coast (heh, we're nextdoor neighbours in US terms :D) Nice to have you here.

Last time I was in your county it was for the Padstow Mayday shenanigans. Where abouts are you then?

I didn't know you could post here. thought that only the mods did and me being so lowly.. well anyhow it's good to have someone from Cornwall join us. My father's people came from your area but I don't think he was a smuggler or summat?
My name is Rie. and I've been enjoying this Cafe for about a year.:)

My name dustbin was an old school nick name as I would eat almost anything. That was because I have always enjoyed eating and I was always hungry. Iam just down the road from Padstow in Newquay.

Hi Dustbin. I'm a fairly recent arrival myself, so thought I'd give you a quick wave :)

I have happy memories of Cornwall from when I was a child (holidays), and am hoping to make my way down there again sometime soon.

Welcome.

I just saw your tag in the death thread and looked this up. A belated welcome. I've a rather similar story to you in some ways.
Born in Sheffield. Lived in SE Cornwall (Torpoint and Downderry primarily) most of my life from the age of 11 or so. Most of the folks are down that way still.

Love your neck of the woods, i know most the breaks around Padstow down to ST Aggies pretty well and have spent an inordinate amount of time round Boobys and Constantine.

Now i live in a beautiful country but with no pastys. But very good steak with which to make your own :)

I have to say that I don't think that you could teach our resident expat Cornwallian anything about sledgehammer diplomacy, thoughOh fuck off you dozy twat :D

A belated welcome from me.

I lived in various parts of Cornwall as a child and belonged to the Cornish Society when I was at Oxford (a long, long time ago that was -- you couldn't get pasties in England in those days and we had to have them sent up from Cornwall for our drunken suppers.)
