View Full Version : Is this typical of the NOBAMA crowd?

A casual young friend of mine told me last week that she was upset because one of her neighbors had scraped off the N from her NOBAMA bumper sticker. I looked at her and asked her how someone who has been on medicaid when she was poor, single and pregnant, received 4K from the earned income credit, was currently getting money from a Pell Grant so she could attend college and had a baby that was receiving WIC vouchers could possibly support anyone from the Republican party. I explained that those were all liberal programs and if given the power, the Republicans would likely cut them all out or reduce their funding. She gave me a dumb look and then said that she really didn't want to discuss it. ( This is no shit ) This same 22 year old woman has asked me for advice on her relationship with her boyfriend, has given me details of her sex life and has vented to me when her mother and step dad threatened to throw her out of the house, yet she didn't want to talk about why she supported the Republican party. I could only assume that she is either totally clueless or perhaps just going along with the crowd. I told her that I hoped she would read up on the policies of all the candidates before she voted and not just go along with what was popular in our area.

Do you think this is common among Republican voters? Do you think that people like my friend will make a huge impact this fall? Have any of you had similar experiences when discussing politics with Republican friends? This reminded me of the old people in the Tea Party that were yelling for the government to keep its hands off of their medicare.

I've known a lot of Nobamas that are one or two issue voters. These issues are usually immigrants and abortion. :/ Not sure if that is typical, but fear it is so.

Can't comment on how it is in the US, but I've always been astounded that poorer people in the UK could vote Tory - Style over substance, maybe?

Find the strings and pull, eh?

Let me also add that those Nobamas that I know dislike liberals for those one or two topics, and dislike everything else about them by default. Without actually understanding the reasons, which is one good reason to avoid discussing it with anyone else that may not be in full agreement. :D

Most NOBAMAS that I know are (1) birthers, and (2) against "socialized" medicine, even while using "socialized" roads, libraries, fire companies, and have parents who are on Social Security or are on it themselves.

Maybe they should have to fill in a quick survey before accepting any sort of socialised medicine...

What non-Americans need to know is that democracy in the United States is a deeply flawed process. That flaw is to assume that the average voter is smart enough to adequately assess their own interests.

They aren't.

The average U.S. voter is dumber than the proverbial bag of hammers.

Those voters who have a couple of synapses to rub together are usually manipulated by money, threats, or propaganda.

Those who are intelligent enough to make intelligent and rational decisions have often fled the democratic process in frustration and disgust.

It made me laugh when the republicans held up 'Joe the plumber' as a typical American who was going to suffer under the democrats - $250k a year, you should all be so lucky to have his problems :)

I have a feeling abortion and/or gay marriage is the issue for my young woman friend. She has never been shy before about expressing her opinions to me and that is why I was surprised when she refused to discuss her reasons for hating Obama and the Democrats.

I saw another woman this morning wearing a McCain/Palin t-shirt while she was exercising. Another woman asked her if she would vote for Palin if she ran next time, and she said she really didn't want to, but she would be better than what we had in now. I swear I sometimes think the majority of the women in my town don't know how to think for themselves.

I dread the outcome of the midterm elections this fall.

I don't know any in real life, but the ones I run into online are nearly all just purely racist. They cannot STAND the fact that a black man is in the White House, so they are grasping at the birther nonsense in order to de-legitimize Obama.

Read through the Yahoo News message boards sometime, and you'll find that about 1/3 of the comments are hateful racist tripe, and that any racist comment gets about 1/3 "thumbs up" ratings.

Somebody probably told her that Obama wants to eliminate white people, and she believes it.

Most of my friends are republicans and its basically for two reasons.
1) They are under the basic ideal that democrats will change society. The type of change doesn't matter, change itself is bad.

2) Gun laws.

I can't parse that as a single idea thread.

I've known a lot of Nobamas that are one or two issue voters. These issues are usually immigrants and abortion. :/ Not sure if that is typical, but fear it is so.The jobless numbers and the economy are the two top issues I have with Nobama. Immigration policy is up there. But not as important as joblessness and the economy. I was promised that my taxes would not increase one dime - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4rAE77K9yg&feature=related. What he didn't tell you was that they added a massive consumption tax. I smoke. The taxes the federal government imposed on the tobacco companies caused my cigarettes to more than double in price within 6 months. I've been thinking about quitting, before this tax hike. I know it's bad and I need to quit. But, I'll quit on my own terms, goddamnit, not some nanny-state government infringing on my freedoms and forcing me to quit. ...... those motherfuckers!!

So, how many more years are we to blame Bush? (although, I did not approve of his endorsement of the first stimulus/bail-out bill) The jobless rate where I live is in the double-digits. It's never been this bad for as long as I can remember.

When will it no longer be Bush's fault, and Obama take full blame for any of his own miscalculations, unintended consequences, and fuck-ups?
