...:( It is a fixture in my little town in Oz. The pub is a male domain and hearty are the denizens thereof. And where are the women? You might well ask.
Not to upset sensibilities here but also every woman in town knows where the brothels and the drug dealers are.

Moved from Science and Skepticism to Miscellaneous Discussions, as it fits better in here.

Okay, I'll ask. Where are the women? In these parts, they'd be right there in the pub (which we call a tavern or a bar) and are known as barflys or barbitches. Or, if they're not there, they'd be in their OWN pub. Or, if they were like my wife, they'd by sponsoring in-home gatherings of the Ladies' Quilting and Terrorist Society, complete with daquiris and flavored vodkas.

Not to upset sensibilities here but also every woman in town knows where the brothels and the drug dealers are.

Yeah? Is that from person experience of having worked in those professions?

Your place is weird. Austrian winehouse (http://www.mostheuriger-pfeiffer.at/Heuriger/Heuriger_neu_Leute.jpg) for comparison.

Ah, yes...Plying the babes with alcoholic beverages. Or, at minimum, setting a bad example. ;)

Stereotypic US tavern, as glorified on Cheers, a long running television sitcom:

Cheers is actually the Bull & Finch Pub in downtown Boston.

Just to round off the thread... Although I have a dear friend who worked as a prostitute to pay off a big debt, I have never been in a brothel or worked in one. I think I'd be a really bad prostitute.

But 'tis true that in this little town most women seem to know where the brothels are.
If you can stop the gag reflex then maybe it's the job for you but me ? No.

BTW Roo have you ever been in a brothel?

Of course all pubs are different but I venture to say that the Aussie Pub is a species all its own. You hear it before you actually see it for one thing. And 'no poofters' allowed as Monty Python says.
It's a home away from home for 'the boys'.
Meanwhile at home, the Frau of the household is doing her own thing. 'Nuff said.

Yeah....right.

Yeah...right? Roo, is that posting any opinion or just a cop out? You lowered my opinion of you by inferring that I may have had experience in working as a prostitute. And if I had? That would be my business.
So go back to your chooks Roo and don't venture onto human foibles.

That posting is an 'Americanism'. It could well involve a misunderstanding of content. To me, it expresses full doubt in the allusion that there are no "poofters" in Oz pubs. That they are all male and pridominantly male seems to assure to me that there are at least some gay males amongst them....the term 'poofters' being interpreted by me to mean 'gay males'.

'Yeah....right' in the context I cited it means, "that's a load of bollocks".

Then...As for inferring that you may have had experience working as a prostitute, you could have just said "No" and been done with it...it was a snide comment deserving a snide response. If you've no experience with brothels, then perhaps you shouldn't allude to knowing where they all are. It was your statement which inferred the association. All the innocent would have no idea that such things even existed, much less where they all are.

As for whether I've ever been in a brothel, I'd have to admit that I have been. The thing is, it was part of an historical tour of a local town's history (my birthplace, in actuality). The brothel hasn't been active since the year before I was born. Interestingly, the historians who have renovated and restored the bordello and researched the history of the business in their town, the "Entertainment Capital of the Inland Empire", noted that most, if not all, of the practitioners who came to be part of the house were escapees from domestic abuse who showed up at the back door of the brothel, asking for refuge. The madam took them in as she could, taught them homemaking skills (cooking, sewing, cleaning) as they worked up their own trusseau and, when the madam noticed a particular visitor who made repeated visits to a particular girl, she would encourage marriages. Evidently, there was no shortage of abused younger girls to take the places of those working girls who moved on to life as a wife to a rancher, farmer, ranch hand, or homesteader.

The historians were quick to note that this was not always the case and that there were many bordellos on Main Street and they didn't all have such understanding or compassionate madams, but at least in the cases where they did, the girls left the life of a 'working girl' a better, more self-reliant, person.

So...All in all, I'm not quite sure what you are on about.

Roo apparently, as a reliable authority informs me, most women here in this gay and happy little town, which distinguished itself by a very nasty murder carried out by two High School girls, would go all vague and suddenly remember that they forgot to turn the gas off and so I never did find out exactly where the bordellos were.

What I'm on about is that the male 'mateship' thing in Aussie culture needs looking into. I have a male friend who admitted that his mate had offered 'to take care of that, mate' because he was randy and had an erection??????
