I'm very happy to have recently found out that my best friends son, who I absolutely adore, has professed a real interest in science.
He's just about to turn 6, and recently visited the museums in London for the first time. I'd love to buy him some good starter science books to encourage this interest. He reads slightly about his age level and is quite bright; can anyone recommend any good starter science books?

Peter Sis has some fantastic science picture books - Starry Messenger, about Galileo, and The Tree of Life, about Darwin.

Maybe he's a bit young for this, but The Science of Discworld by Pratchett and others at some point.
'Flatland' by some Victorian dude, and 'Flatterland' by Ian Stewart (one of Pratchett's co-authors above is again perhaps a bit premature - but not really all that much if the reading age is good.
They are to be considered on the next few years, rather than right now, I'd suggest.

I'm working on a collection of books for him actually, being a bit of a book-nerd myself I usually have a book or two along with his other presents when x-mas and his birthday rolls around. I'm collecting the Lemony Snicket series for him for when he's a bit older (mainly because I liked them, although they were probably aimed at a younger audience!) and think when he's old enough that Terry Pratchetts novels would be a great present, I wish someone had bought them for me.

I think he should have read at least some of the Pratchett books before going into The Science of Discworld.
But from the science POV, the Science of Discworld is actually pretty damn good.

I've seen lots of 'experiment' books for kids, so I might check out a few of them to make sure he won't be able to blow anything up or drive my best mate mad with them, lol.
