View Full Version : Is John Roberts a lying, conservative disaster?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20090327/pl_politico/20560_1
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Friday that John Roberts misled the Senate during his confirmation hearings by pretending to be a moderate — and that the United States is now “stuck” with him as chief justice.
“Roberts didn’t tell us the truth. At least Alito told us who he was,” Reid said, referring to Samuel Alito, the second Supreme Court justice nominated by President George W. Bush. “But we’re stuck with those two young men, and we’ll try to change by having some moderates in the federal courts system as time goes on — I think that will happen.”

Meh. Dick flapping. Robert's record was out there in plain view. It was damned easy to look at what decisions he had made and what kind of cases he had been involved with. It was obvious to me that the man was a conservative.

At least, Reid was not being a hypocrite on this one. He was one of the 22 Democrats who voted against Roberts (http://www.senate.gov/legislative/LIS/roll_call_lists/roll_call_vote_cfm.cfm?congress=109&session=1&vote=00245). If Democrats had stood together, they could have sustained a filibuster, but then they would have been behaving like Republicans, i.e. sticking to a political agenda. Instead, an equal number of Democrats--22--voted to confirm the liar.
It was appropriate for Reid to remind his fellow Democrats of this now. When Obama begins to appoint SC justices, we will be lucky to see even a handful of Republicans vote to confirm. They are not as likely as Democrats to go along to get along. Ironically, we now have so-called "Conservadems" who are standing up with Republicans to try to block the agenda of a Democratic President. What a sorry bunch they are!

I agree. It was quite obvious that Roberts was very conservative. It's not very often that congress rejects a judge due to ideology so I don't know why anyone would have expected anything different.

Not just a conservative, but a rightwing nutcase.
The fucking Senate couldn't be bothered to do their job and vet SC nominees.

That's what happens when you widen the tent enough to command a near super-majority. The Republicans are more unified right now because there are only a handful of Congressional moderates left. Between the two, it is better to have the headaches of dealing with internal dissent than to be stuck in the minority.
