I watched 'roots' [1977] today, having never seen it before - It was compelling viewing.

I watched it first time around - good stuff!

I love the bit where the father holds the baby Kunta-Kinte up to see the stars and says "behold the only thing greater than yourself"

Powerful and painful story - although Hayley plagiarised much of Kunta-Kinte's story from another book - the real credit should go to Courlander:

Good article on the whole debacle here:

best show I've seen in a while was Deadwood.
more recently i backtracked through 5 seasons of House which i enjoyed (despite expecting Laurie to go all George at any moment )

Dexter is fun. season 4 in particular was pretty epic.

and ihave been lulzing at the Inbetweeners and MItchell and Webb. Just started Gavin and Stacy which seems to have its moments (most often when rob brydon is involved)

QI is a perpetual given as well as Mock The Week. and i've been PT backtracking old Buzzcocks with a muso Canadian mate.

I've just starting watching a few episodes of the Inbetweeners, definitely funny stuff, and I love pretty much anything with Mitchell and Webb in.
I just starting watching Gavin & Stacey aswell, mainly on BBC iplayer, and you're so right in saying that the best bits are Rob Brydon's scenes, he is one funny bastard.

I do like Supernatural, even if I don't believe in the content. I also love Miranda, a BBC comedy series starring Miranda Hart. It actually makes me laugh out loud :)

I have a long 'to watch' list which includes, Dexter, series 2 of Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and a few others.

Two of my co-workers watch Arrested Development and highly recommend it.

Silly, I don't believe in that stuff either, but Supernatural is a good show. I also loved Ghost Whisperer and Medium. :)

I also recently watched all seasons of The Guild. Free online. :) Hilarious, especially if you have played MMOs.

I've been without a tv since Sept 09 and don't miss it one bit.
When I'm at my husband's house I watch House and a few other programs. That's maybe once/month.

Yup. Miranda.

It ought not to be as funny as it is, but it is. I can feel a Heather Small moment coming on as we speak...

'Dexter' on TV and 'The Style Channel' on Foxtel for Joan River's intelligent wit as in "How'd Ya Get So Rich?". Also on Foxtel "21st Street" a series of crime/'detective story' episodes

Yeah my tv died a few months ago and I've not bothered replacing it, I can find most stuff I want to see on the net. Just wish tere was more worth finding. At the moment the only thing I make an effort to watch is Dexter. I keep expecting to be disappointed each new season, but it always reels me back in, I love it.

Thats a shining endorsement. Ok, I'm gonna make an effort to watch a few episodes this weekend. I'll download the first few and see how I get on...

we havent had networked TV in 7 years, i just download shows based on recommendation like in this thread and stream them to the TV via the PS3.

that way i get to cherry pick shows, get brit shows you just cant get in N America (ie everything other than Mr Bean and fucking Benny Hill reruns) and everything is ad free (and cost free, if slightly illegal) yay.Plus we tend to have a couple nights of watching the entire season then its done. Its a very time efficient and immersive way of TV watching.

re Dexter, i thought season 3 with the dude from LA Law was pretty weak but the rest have been epic. Season 4 with John Lithgow (the big friednly looking 3rd Rock dude) especially, and so far season 5 is pretty damn good.

They STILL show Benny Hill? I'm not old enough to have watched it 1st time around, but I bet it was crap back then too.

Matty
13 Dec 2010, 01:18 PM
they did last time i could be arsed to flick through the channels at a mate shouse.
the other one that they inexplicable exported was Keeping Up Appearances.

i've been educating a few mates on modern UK humour with the likes of Mock the Week, Shameless, and Inbetweeners as well as Ricky gervais stand up and the like.

Keeping Up Appearences?? FFS!! I don't know why they made that shite in this country, who made the decision to inflict it on other people?
Maybe it was aired specially for the Guantanamo channel, "all torture, all the time. Next up, Bruce Forsyth sings the greatest hits of Britney Spears".

This season of Dexter almost lost me, but thank goodness it finally picked up!

I've also been watching Little Britain.

season five was always destined to be pretty good because [spoiler]
annoying Rita is finally dead, about fucking time

Julia Styles is just a bonus though to be fair Johhny Lee Miller is stealing the show IMO.

I don't know why they made that shite in this country, who made the decision to inflict it on other people?i dunno but the common North American perception of UK humour is that, Benny Hill, Mr Bean and Monty python. Maybe a bit of Eddie Izzard.

hence the reason i take such pleasure in dropping a bit of Frankie Boyle into the mix. :)

Go for it Silly Sausage - it grabbed me from episode 1, well the opening credits actually lol

Matty - agreed s3 was the weakest, and it has become kinda formulaic what with a baddie-of-the-season and the oh noes surely dexter must get caught this time!! thing, but the writing and depth of supporting cast somehow keeps it fresh. I'm finding his sister is my favourite character now, I think Dxter's first person narrative was fascinating at first, but it's made his character too knowable. Though I like that he's still realising new stuff about himself

But she is fairly cute and entertainingly foul mouthed.

Dr Who. That's pretty much it, just Dr Who. Many years ago, back when The Sopranos were on, I took a conscious decision to never watch another American series that had no end in sight, and I've never looked back. Must have saved me countless hours. Hours that I then spent on World of Warcraft, but still :o

Actually, it was a TV clip on Youtube, but do you know the best thing I've watched recently? Jay Kay from Jamiroquai getting headbutted on Youtube. Bliss! Probably my media highlight of the millenium so far :)

I do find that irritating, I wish that producers didn't drag things out for the profit at the expense of story.

I really enjoyed the first season of Heroes, and had high hopes for it. However, it was obviously not the kind of show that was going to be able to run and run, and that was obvious by the rapid drop in standards, followed by its cancellation. Such a disappointment.

House & Deadwood for me. My wife loves Glee & True Blood.

I watched the reboot of Battlestar Galactica up until about 1/2 way through the final season, it started looking likethat the writers had no idea how they were going to finish and that the ending would suck. From what I've read I think I was right.

About the only must-watch show in our house (when it shows on tv) is Glee for me and my daughter, and my son watches No Ordinary Family every week. During the summer our whole family's must-watch show is True Blood.

I download a number of shows to watch at my leisure otherwise: Smallville (great final season so far), Stargate Universe (doomed to die, I think), South Park, Ugly Americans, Futurama and a number of other animated shows.

I keep hearing that Dexter and Fringe are great, but i'm just biding my time to eventually watch them I guess. I can barely keep up with the small amount of shows I do watch.

IMO, the end of BSG was well worth it. Yeah, the writers obviously lost themselves in a few places through the show but the end delivered and wrapped up all the stories that needed wrapping.

Jay Kay from Jamiroquai getting headbutted on Youtube.

i'm a big fan of Jamirooquai, and much as he is an arrogant prick, i also think Jay Kay is pretty damn cool, but whooboy he fucking asked for that. Its only a surprise it took so long.
