Default Romney and ordinary people

He just doesn't get it!

At a “lecture” for students at Otterbein University in Ohio today, Mitt Romney told students that, his friend, Jimmy John, started a business by borrowing $20,000 from his parents at a low interest rate. Romney suggested anyone in the audience could do the same
Particularly in the present economic conditions, how many parents could afford such a loan?

Not only that, but very few businesses would be able to start up and be successful with only 20K in loans. It would take an exceptional person and a lot of luck to build up a business on such a small investment. His advice would be a recipe for failure. Romney is clueless.

According to Boehner, none of this matters

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/0...n_1462570.html

Quote:
Mitt Romney's privileged background and personal wealth will not prevent Americans from voting for him in November's presidential election, Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said on Sunday morning.

"The American people do not want to vote for a loser," Boehner told CNN's "State of the Union with Candy Crowley." "They don't want to vote for someone who hasn't been successful. I think Mitt Romney has a chance to show the American people that they, too, can succeed."

The House speaker's own background offers a sharp contrast with that of the former Massachusetts governor. Boehner "grew up mopping floors and waiting tables at his family tavern" and "worked several jobs to pay his way" through Xavier University, according to the official biography on his website. Romney holds law and business degrees from Harvard and made a fortune with Bain Capital before turning to politics, and his father, George Romney, was a wealthy auto executive who went on to become Michigan's governor and later served in the Nixon administration.

There it is...that's it....YOU, TOO, COULD BE ONE OF THOSE REALLY RICH GUYS!

As if.

That is the myth, though, which animates so many of the 'ordinary people' to continue to prop up the plutocrats. The one where they, too, work hard enough and have the awesome insight to make the all the right moves and come out on top as one of the multi-billion dollar 1% denizens. It is the same myth which props up Lotto, Las Vegas, and Atlantic City.

Nobody pays attention to the thousands that fall by the wayside, are trampled, and are ground underfoot by their fellow 'ordinary people'. They just see the occasional anomaly allowed by the casino owners...the ones who set the hook on so many others.

I think there is also the myth in American society that the ones who succeed in private business have done so because of their own talents and hard work. While I agree that talent and hard work are a necessary condition for success, it is not sufficient. Plenty of people who are talented and hard working fail for reasons that are not under their control.

Talent and hard work can, and frequently do, lose out to cunning, ruthlessness, influence, and general con artistry.

Ordinary people don't wear magic protection underwear.
